Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Port of Spain

The Archdiocese of Port of Spain (Latin: Portus Archidioecesis Hispaniae ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Port of Spain. It was built in 1850 and includes the two main islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and two dozen smaller islands. The territory comprises the state of Trinidad and Tobago with a total area of ​​5128 km ² and has 1.2624 million inhabitants, of whom 289 460 Catholics ( 26%).

History

Pope Leo X in 1516 founded the Territorial Abbey Trinidad, which was abandoned in 1650. Pius XII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Trinidad on 23 February 1818 cession of territory of the Diocese of Santo Tomás de Guayana.

On 10 January 1837, was a part of the territory in favor of the newly established Apostolic Vicariate of Jamaica. At the Diocese of Roseau it gave another piece of land and it was collected with parts of the Apostolic Prefecture of the West Indies, which was dissolved at the Metropolitan diocese.

On February 20, 1956 gave off a piece of its territory to the foundation of the Diocese of Saint George's, Grenada.
