Roman Catholic Diocese of Tanjore
The Diocese of Tanjore (Latin: Dioecesis Taniorensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic diocese based in Tanjore.
History
Pope Pius XII. founded it with the Apostolic Constitution Ex primaevae Ecclesiae on November 13, 1952 from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Madras - Mylapore, where it was a suffragan.
On August 7, 1953, was part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore.
Territory
The diocese comprises the districts of Tanjore Thanjavur (without the taluks of Papanasam and Kumbakonam ), Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and six taluks of the district Pudukkottai and two others in Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu.
Place of pilgrimage
The diocese is Velankanni, the largest Catholic pilgrimage site in Asia, with the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health.
