Roman Catholicism in Nepal

The Roman Catholic Church in Nepal is a minority church.

Originally the Archdiocese of Patna ( India) duly which 147,181 km ² area on 7 October 1983 into an independent mission sui juris charged.

In the following years, the Mission has developed rapidly, so that, in 1988, still counted 2,174 believers, had increased in 2001 to 6,195 worshipers. Also, the structure of an internal structure was successful, and the number of parishes increased in the same time from 13 to 35 at.

On 8 November 1996, the mission to the Apostolic Prefecture, conducted by the Jesuits, raised. They managed to train a native clergy, who already counted six priests in 2001. At the same time were located in the prefecture of 40 religious priests and 104 nuns, mainly from abroad.

Pope Benedict XVI. elevated the Apostolic Prefecture on 10 February 2007 on the Apostolic Vicariate and appointed the former prefect Anthony Sharma SJ bishop.

The seat of the Vicar Apostolic is located in Kathmandu.
