Roman Catholicism in Switzerland

The Roman Catholic Church in Switzerland is located in Switzerland part of the Roman Catholic Church world. It counts about 3.1 million members, representing a population share of 38.6 %. A Swiss specialty is the complement of the canonical system by the state canonical system and the associated positive and juxtaposition.

Organization

The organization of the Roman Catholic Church of Switzerland has a worldwide unique juxtaposition of hierarchically organized Episcopal Church and democratically organized state church.

The six Rome directly subordinate dioceses are:

  • Bishopric of Basel, based in Solothurn Cantons of Aargau, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Bern, Jura, Lucerne, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau, train
  • Cantons of Glarus, Graubünden, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Uri, Schwyz (except area Abbey Einsiedeln Abbey ), Zurich
  • Cantons of Fribourg, Geneva, Neuchâtel, Vaud
  • Canton of Ticino
  • Cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, St. Gallen

And two abbeys area:

  • Einsiedeln Abbey
  • Abbey of Saint -Maurice

These bishoprics and abbeys area are joined together in the Swiss Bishops Conference ( SBK).

The cantonal state law organizations are united in the Roman Catholic Central Conference of Switzerland ( RKZ ).

With regard to the appointment of bishops in the dioceses of Basel, Chur and St. Gallen Special rules apply.

History

The formation of the first Catholic offshoot by missionaries on the present territory of Switzerland dates back to the early Middle Ages. Until the Reformation, the Roman Church permeated all spheres of social and political life comprehensively. A second phase of suppression after the Reformation formed the Enlightenment, liberalism and cultural struggle. Even then sat down - similar to other denominations - the secularization of social life continued. After the Second World War joined - along with leaving the church - the immigration of people from other cultures / religions added. In addition, it has increasingly struggling with a shortage of priests. Nevertheless, the Roman Church still the largest denomination group in the country.

In 2011 Basel Stadt and Basel-Land was filed at the state level, an initiative for the cantons, which requires the priesthood for women and the abolition of compulsory celibacy; the popular vote is still pending.
