Roman the Great

Roman Mstislavich also Roman the Great ( * 1150, † 1205 ) was a Ruthenian prince of the noble family of Rurik. He was in the years 1168-1170 Prince in Veliky Novgorod, from 1170 in Volodymyr, Halych and down from 1199 in 1202 in Kiev. Roman was the founder of the Principality of Halych - Volodymyr.

Life

Roman was the son of Mstislav Isjaslawitsch, Grand Prince of Kiev, from its connection with Agnes of Poland, daughter of the Polish ruler Bolesław III. Wrymouth and Salome von Berg. He reigned 1168-1170 in Veliky Novgorod, which from 1170 Volodymyr followed, which he inherited after the death of his father. He tried in 1187 to the Principality of Halych to seize, due to the local boyar opposition, but without success. He married in 1197 Anna, a Byzantine princess, who bore him four children, including the future King Daniel. He fought in several campaigns (1197-1198, 1201 and 1204 ) successfully the steppe people of the Cumans. It finally succeeded in 1199 with Polish support in the Principality of Halych to gain a foothold, which he combined with his principality Volodymyr in today Volyn Principality of Halych - for powerful Volodymyr. He reached in 1202 by the Grand Duke dignity, by occupying the ancient capital of Kievan Rus, Kiev.

Roman went down in the history of the region as a strong and wise ruler.
