Romuva (religion)

Romuva is a neoethnische religion that sees itself in the tradition of pre-Christian religion of Lithuania. The name is derived from the altprußischen sanctuary Romowe in Nadrauen, one of the last major shrines of pre-Christian Europe, which was described by Peter of Dusburg first time. Romuva is recognized by the Lithuanian State religious community.

The Romuva movement was from the East Prussian -Lithuanian teachers Vydūnas (1868-1953) was launched. The church is based primarily on the rich folkloric material of Lithuanian culture and is similar to the comparable Dievturiba community in Latvia to see in the context of national awakening of the Baltic peoples in the 19th century.

The symbol of Romuva movement, an oak with an eternal flame, reminiscent of the Romowe sanctuary, symbolizing the three levels of existence - the world of the dead ( the past), the world of the living ( the present) and the divine sphere ( the future ), which are connected in a harmonious unity with each other.
