Ron Basford

Stanley Ronald "Ron" Basford PC QC ( born April 22, 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba; † 31 January 2005) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party.

Life

After schooling Basford graduated and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts ( BA). A subsequent post-graduate studies in law, he finished with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ) and then took up a career as a lawyer.

After he unsuccessfully ran for the lower house elections on 18 June 1962 he was first elected in the elections of April 8, 1963 for the constituency of Vancouver - Burrard as a member of the House of Commons. Since the general election of June 25, 1968 Basford belonged to the House of Commons until his mandate waiver on February 20, 1979, representing the constituency of Vancouver - Centre.

In July 1972 he was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs in the 20th Federal Cabinet. Subsequently, he was Minister of State for Urban Affairs, and from August 1974 to September 1975 Minister of State revenue, before he was Minister of Justice and Attorney General in September 1975. He was also from 28 January-1 February 1978, Acting Solicitor General. On 8 February 1978 he resigned for personal reasons from his office as Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

After retiring from the House of Commons in February 1979, he resumed his career as a lawyer again.
