Ronald G. Douglas

Ronald George Douglas ( born December 10, 1938 in Osgood ( Indiana)) is an American mathematician.

Douglas studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1960 and his doctorate in 1962 at Pasquale Porcelli at Louisiana State University ( Structure of Lp spaces ). Then he was only instructor and later professor at the University of Michigan. From 1969 he was professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook ( SUNY ). 1971 to 1973 he was faced with the mathematics faculty from 1986 to 1990 he was Dean of Physics and Mathematics, and from 1990 Vice Provost. 1996 to 2002 he was Provost at Texas A & M University. He subsequently Distinguished Professor of Mathematics.

1965/66 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and in 1974 visiting scholar at the University of Newcastle. He was a visiting professor at Aarhus University, the Mittag-Leffler Institute, the Australian National University (1991 ), Tel Aviv University and the University of Szechuan. In 1978 he held the Hermann Weyl Lectures at the Institute for Advanced Study and in 1978 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki ( Extensions of C * - algebras and algebraic topology ).

It deals with functional analysis and operator algebras. In 1977, he led by Lawrence G. Brown and Peter Fillmore techniques of algebraic topology, in the theory of operator algebras, which is known as BDF - theory by the first letter of the mathematicians involved.

He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. 1980/81 he was a Guggenheim Fellow and 1968-1974 Sloan Fellow.

He is the father of the physicist Michael R. Douglas.
