Rose Bampton

Elizabeth Rose Bampton ( born November 28, 1907 in Lakewood, Ohio; † August 21, 2007 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania) was an American opera singer with the voice soprano.

Life

Bampton was in 1929 as a student Siebel in Gounod 's opera Faust their debut. The singer was best known for her dramatic soprano roles as Sieglinde and Donna Anna. She lived from 1932 to 1950 at New York's Metropolitan Opera the peak of her career.

Bampton was among the favorite performers of Arnold Schoenberg, who called her three -octave voice of a "miracle". They participated in the conducted by Leopold Stokowski American premiere of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder et al. Under the direction of Arturo Toscanini Bampton sang Leonore in Beethoven 's only opera Fidelio. In 1937 she married the Canadian conductor and pianist Wilfrid Pelletier ( 1896-1982 ). The marriage remained childless. 1963 Bampton retired from the opera stage and worked as a singing teacher in Montreal and New York.
