The Rotstein ( Upper Sorbian Hrodźišćo = " Lair" ) is a mountain massif in the district of Görlitz, which is named after its highest mountain.

Location

It is located east of the city Lobau and is surrounded by the towns of Bischdorf, Dolgowitz, Sohland am Rotstein, Zoblitz and Rosenhain. Extend north of the Rotsteins between Lobau and Reichenbach / Upper Lusatia the federal highway 6 and the railway line Dresden- Görlitz. On the crest was once part of the county boundary between the Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia and the district Lobau -Zittau.

End of October 2000 was inaugurated a new iron lookout tower. The tower is 21 meters high and has 101 steps.

Nature reserve

The Rotstein one of the oldest nature reserves in Saxony (oldest nature reserve Upper Lusatia ) was made in 1912 under nature protection. With about 530, often rare plant species, it is the most species-rich mountain of Upper Lusatia. Typical are the following: liverwort, daphne, forest Gedenkemein, white fir, Oxlip, Turk's cap lily, yew, meadows gladiolus and arum lily.
