Round Island burrowing boa

The Mauritiusboa ( Bolyeria multocarinata ) is the only species of the genus within the family of Bolyeria Bolyerschlangen. It is probably extinct and was endemic to the small island of Iceland Round at Mauritius. It must not be confused with the still on Round Round - Iceland Iceland occurring Boa ( Casarea dussumieri ) from the monotypic snake genus Casarea.

Description

The Mauritiusboa reached a length of 100 cm and had a längsgeripptes shed dress. Unlike other Boas lacked the pelvic girdle with her. It was characterized by a pointed snout and a cylindrical body and head. The color was brown.

Habitat and food

The Mauritiusboa had an extremely limited distribution area of 1.5 km ². Their habitat consisted of hardwood forests and palm savannas. She lived on stone fields and in crevices and fed on skinks and geckos probably from. In the past Bolyeria was also known from Mauritius. Here, the snake was probably wiped out by pigs.

Extinction

As early as 1949 was the Mauritiusboa as very rare. In 1975, she was last seen. The reason for their disappearance habitat loss is expected due to soil erosion caused by overgrazing by goats and rabbits.
