Rouran Khaganate

Rouran (Ch柔然" swarming vermin " ) was the name of an early medieval tribal federation that existed between the 3rd and 6th centuries in Central Asia and had its basis in today's Mongolia.

The ethnic origin of the Rouran is unknown. However, it is believed that these were formed from different nomadic tribes that are now regarded as mainly Altaic.

Your relationship with the Avars and equating Rouran with these is considered to be controversial.

The tribal confederation of Rouran was also known by the name " Ruanruan ", " Shou- shan ", " Shuan Shuan - " and " Juan- Juan ".

History

The tribal confederation of Rouran was formed in the 3rd century under Yujiulü Mokolü (reigned 277-307 ). In the following years they conquered large parts of Central Asia. Already under Prince She- lüan (r. 394-410 ), this was also known as " Kütelbüri " which Rouran controlled all the areas which were located north of the Gobi.

Finally, the Rouran threatened the borders of China. 429 the Rouran were struck under their Khan Ta -t'an (r. 415-429 ) of the frühturkvölkischen Wei Dynasty ( Tabgatsch ).

After lengthy border wars with the Wei Dynasty the kingdom of Rouran under the rule of A -na- kuei (r. 520-522 ) was shaken by internal disputes, as the Prince Po -lo- men rebelled against the Rouran Khan. A- na -kuei first sought refuge in the neighboring Tabgatsch. The victorious appearing Po -lo- men followed A- na -kuei to northern China, after he had repulsed an attack by the Gaoche.

China for its part played both nomadic princes against each other, by supporting both. Here, China proceeded to the motto " divide et impera " ( "divide and dominant "). A- na -kuei received the eastern area around the Yin -shan Mountains, the area west of the Koko -nor fell to Po -lo- men. However, this was not satisfied with the territory assigned to him. The formerly on the Rouran ruling clan was killed in the year 556 in China during an uprising.
