Roxburghe Club

The Roxburghe Club is a British association of collectors and bibliophiles.

On July 13, 1812 in London, the valuable library of John of Roxburghe, the descendant of one of Scotland's oldest noble families, auctioned. 24 days took the auction. As a valuable piece of the rare folio edition ( 1471 ) by Giovanni Boccaccio was sold at a price of 2260 pounds sterling.

Subsequently, founded 30 auction participants the Roxburghe Club, which met annually at the memorable days of the sale Boccaccio, on July 13, in the St. Albans Tavern. Gradually, the company has grown and each member continued his point of honor to publish at his own expense excellent and rare works of the older English literature as a reprint. Only 42 copies for the members of the club are always prepared. However, each member can take up to 300 copies can be produced equipment (less expensive, but still bibliophile ), which are available for purchase. The ballads of the eponymous Duke of Roxburghe were also the RC later published.

The Roxburghe Club became the model for many similar associations in the UK and other countries.
