Roy Brooks

Roy Brooks ( born September 3, 1938 in Detroit, † November 16, 2005 there ), was an American drummer of modern jazz.

Life and work

Roy Brooks started his musical career at the age of 14 years in local rhythm-and - blues groups. First he played with Yusef Lateef, Barry Harris and Joe Henderson, before 1959 a member of the Horace Silver Quintet was, where he remained until 1964. He then worked freelance for Chet Baker, Junior Cook and Blue Mitchell. 1967 to 1970 he played again with Lateef, then from 1970 to 1972 with Pharoah Sanders and James Moody. In addition, he made recordings and tours with Shirley Scott, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Stitt, Jackie McLean, Dexter Gordon, Red Garland, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charles McPherson, Red Rodney and 1972/73 in Charles Mingus, with whom he took part in the European tour. Furthermore, Brooks founded a percussion ensemble called The Artistic Truth and the band The Aboriginal Percussion Choir; Brooks was also a long time member of the percussion band of Max Roach, M'Boom. In the 1980s, a solo album for the record label Enja arose; Brooks played in 1986 with Woody Shaw on his album Bemsha Swing Live. He appeared in the 1990s primarily as a percussionist on before illness and imprisonment prevented him from public appearances.
