Roy McCurdy

Roy McCurdy ( born November 28, 1936 in Rochester, New York ) is an American jazz drummer.

McCurdy attended the Eastman School of Music, where he already giggte the age of seventeen with Roy Eldridge and collaborated with Eddie " Cleanhead " Vinson. From 1960 to 1961 McCurdy played with Chuck Mangione and Gap in whose band Jazz Brothers, he was a member of the Art Farmer - Benny Golson Jazztett. after which he worked in 1963 and 1964 with Bobby Timmons, Betty Carter and Sonny Rollins. In 1965 he joined the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, where he worked until Adderley's death in 1975 as a drummer. He has since worked in the Los Angeles area.

As influences on his game called McCurdy Louie Bellson, Shelly Manne, Sam Woodyard, Buddy Rich, Papa Jo Jones, Philly Joe Jones and the bands of Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford and Lionel Hampton. He played with Count Basie, Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Joe Williams, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Art Pepper and Blood, Sweat & Tears.

McCurdy is an associate professor of jazz studies at the University of Southern California.
