Roy Vernon
Thomas Royston Vernon ( born April 14, 1937 in the county of Flintshire, † 4 December 1993 ) was a Welsh football player.
Life and career
Vernon began his career at Blackburn Rovers at the age of 18 years. In 1960 he transferred to Everton for a fee of £ 27,000. His debut for the Toffees he was in the same year. He was the top scorer and captain of FC Everton at the championship triumph in 1963. Vernon was a very slender man with an aquiline nose, he had a good shot, perfect eye for goal and a good technique. A former teammate said of Vernon that he looked like Pinocchio. He was also known for his callousness in penalties. In 1965 he left Everton towards Stoke City for £ 40,000 before he trailed off his career in South Africa. Internationally, he played 32 times for the Welsh national football team, scoring eight goals. He was also a member of he Welsh selection for the Football World Cup 1958 in Sweden. Due to its greatest vice Smoking Vernon got cancer and died in 1993 from this disease.
