Royal Bay

The Royal Bay is a six kilometer wide and eight kilometers deep bay on the north coast of South Georgia. The entrance to the bay is situated between Cape Charlotte and Cape Harcourt.

To the west of the ten -kilometer Ross Glacier flows into a width of four kilometers into the bay. In the south ends of the Weddell Glacier. The Royal Bay is surrounded by up to 2,000 m high mountains.

As in many other places in the area also breed there many birds, including King penguins, Gentoo penguins and cormorants.

History

The Royal Bay was discovered and named in 1775 by a British expedition under James Cook.

1882 was sent as part of the International Polar Year, a German expedition under Carl Schrader, to observe the transit of Venus and make a year regular weather observations and measurements of the geomagnetic field. This group was stationed until 1883 on the northern coast of the bay. Their camp was after S.M.S. Moltke, the ship of the expedition team and at the same time the first motorized vessel that reached South Georgia, called Moltke Harbour.
