Royal National Theatre

The National Theatre is a London-based theater. It lies on the Waterloo Bridge on the River Thames in the renovated part of Bankside on the Thames Foot Path.

The theater was built 1967-1976 to designs by the architect Denys Lasdun. He is regarded as a striking example of architectural brutalism with the use of concrete as a salient feature. The architecture of the building was the subject of public discussion. So thought Prince Charles, that it was like a nuclear power plant. The Royal National Theatre was chosen by the London population, both among the ten most popular as well among the ten most hated building in London. It consists of three theaters:

• " Lyttleton Theatre": hall with classical frontal stage.
• " Dorfman Theatre" (formerly " Cottesloe Theatre" ): A relatively small hall (300 seats ), modeled after a medieval atmosthere courtyard ( the former theater of the rural population ); here the experimental theater is also emphasized by the large variability of seating.

The first director of the theater was Laurence Olivier, after whom the largest of the three theaters, the " Olivier " with 1200 seats, was named. Current Director Nicholas Hytner. The National Theatre is subsidized to about 40 percent by the government, the remaining 60 percent coming from donations and the theater.

The National Theatre is the only theater in London which has a repertoire that is change every five days the pieces and repeat after two weeks, so a total of 25 productions running in the season.
