The Roys Peak ( also Mount Roy, 1581 m ) is a mountain in the south of Lake Wanaka on the South Island of New Zealand. The summit is located about 7 kilometers west of Wanaka. In the summit area are widely to be seen telecommunications equipment. The predominant vegetation is tussock grasses. The peak offers a comprehensive view over Lake Wanaka and the peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park.

The name of the mountain may pass to the Scottish folk hero Rob Roy back, much in the area is named after him, for the Otago region has a strong Scottish past.

Location

Roy Peek forms the northern terminus of a ridge which separates the valley of the River Montatapu from Lake Wanaka and the Cardrona valley of the River. One kilometer to the south is home to Mount Alpha (1631 m ), the next summit of this ridge.

Flora and Fauna

The upper slopes of the Roys Peak are covered in snow and steep for 3 to 4 months of the year. The vegetation is comparatively originally here. At the north-west slopes tussock grasses dominate ( Chionochloa rigida ) and there is a dense litter layer. Between the Tussock grasses found as a larger plant of the daisy family mainly Celmisia lyallii. The most commonly encountered Busch is Dracophyllum pronum. Below 1000 meters the original tussock, bush and forest vegetation has largely disappeared, replaced by fertilized pasture. There is a lot of bedrock in the area of the summit, but showing strong signs of frost weathering.

A special feature is the 1998 discovered Roys Peak gecko, which is a previously undiscovered species ( Hoplodactylus aff. Granulatus ) could act Aotearoa gray geckos.

Increases

Starting point for the normal route is a car park at the Mt Aspiring Road northeast of the summit, about 6 kilometers north- west of Wanaka. The well-developed trail leads through a forest-free grass and bush landscape. Partial private grazing land is crossed, dogs are not allowed, the use of mountain bikes is also prohibited. From almost at the level of the lake ( 280 m) past the starting point to the summit there are nearly 1,300 meters in height, it should be scheduled 3 to 4 hours. A transition to one kilometer south past Mount Alpha is possible, while keeping you up on the ridge
