Rubidium hydroxide is a chemical compound of rubidium. It belongs to the group of hydroxides and is a strong base. It is in the form of a colorless solid.
Production and representation
Aqueous solutions can rubidium rubidium oxide by dissolving in water
Be won or by the reaction of elemental rubidium with water.
Pure rubidium hydroxide can be recovered by precipitation with barium hydroxide from a Rubidiumsulfatlösung.
Properties
Rubidium forms orthorhombic crystals with space group Cmcm, the lattice parameters a = 415 pm, b = 430 pm and c = 122 pm, and four formula units per unit cell.
Rubidium hydroxide having similar chemical properties such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, however, a stronger base. It reacts with carbon dioxide to form rubidium.
Use
Rubidium hydroxide is used as catalyst in the oxidative chlorination. In addition, it can also be used as the strong base. One possible application is the use as electrolytes in batteries, which are used at low temperatures.
