Rubio (Venezuela)

Rubio is a city in the Venezuelan Andes in the state of Táchira. The city was founded in 1794 by Gervasio Rubio is the administrative seat of the municipality of Junín and has 68,869 inhabitants according to the Venezuelan 2001 Census. The captain of Nueva Granada visited the region in 1602. Then, four villages were officially established in this area.

History

Different ethnic groups like the Canias that Carapos and the way Males inhabited this region at the arrival of the Spaniards. In the following years, the Spaniards introduced the system of encomiendas here.

The Conquistador Juan Maldonado was probably the first European to mid-16th century explored the Rubiogebiet and made ​​contact with the natives.

On December 9, 1794 Mr. Gervasio Rubio bought the Hacienda " La Yegüera " that belonged to the children of the captain's Omaña de Rivadeneyra until then. He improved the construction areas ( where they had mainly sugar) and introduced the first coffee plantations.

He built a church, which was inaugurated by his son, the priest Carlos Rubio. The settlement was first called " Santa Bárbara de la Yegüera ".
