States of Venezuela

Venezuela is divided into 23 states ( estados ) and the Capital District (Distrito Capital). In addition, there are the so-called Dependencias Federales de Ultramar, which consist of a series of Venezuela dependent islands.

Before the Civil War (1859-1863) Venezuela was divided into provinces instead of states. The victorious powers wanted to introduce more autonomy to the States, but this was not enforced. From 1863 to the early 20th century there were numerous territorial changes, including numerous mergers and demergers. Only at the end of the same century there were further three new states, namely Delta Amacuro, Amazon and Vargas.
