Geography

Course

The Rückersbach arises when the town district Johannesberg and flows through the Rueckersbacher gorge. It runs from Rückersbach to Schluchthof at Kleinostheim and is widely known for its steep walls and rocks. In the gorge lead over the Rückersbach several small stone bridges. On Schluchthof the Rückersbach reaches a shallow depression, is diverted artificially to the south and then bends again to the west. The creek bed runs today in the ditch of the road to Forest City. After about 500 m the Rückersbach then empties into the Haggraben.

Previously, the Rückersbach was diverted not only to the south but also in a northerly direction on Schluchthof. This partial arm led then just south of Häuserackerhofs in the Haggraben. The Rückersbach was intermittent tributary to the Main, which once flowed in this Urmaintal.

Part of the Rueckersbacher Gorge is recognized by the Bavarian State Office for Environment as Geotop 671A001. See also the list of geological sites in the district of Aschaffenburg.

The phonolite

In a valley of Rueckersbacher gorge there is a nondescript quarry. This was around 1900 in operation and has since been conquered by the forest. There is a curious rock called phonolite. It is molten origin, such as basalt, but with completely different mineralogical and chemical composition.
