Rudolf A. Haunschmied

Rudolf Anton Haunschmied (born 1966 ) is an Austrian author and local historian.

Life and work

Haunschmied grew up in St. Georgen an der Gusen and lives in Traun. In addition to his training as a mechanical engineer, he has worked at a young age with the study of Nazi history around the Gusen concentration camp and could thus also his former secondary school teacher, Martha Gammer convince.

In 1986 he was a founding member of the working group for home, monuments and historical Care St. Georgen ( AHDG ) and later of the enshrined therein memorial service committees Gusen ( Gusen Memorial Committee - GMC). In 1989 he published at the request of the market town of St. Georgen first time about his research efforts on the history of the local concentration camp, led excursions through the traces of the former concentration camps Gusen I, Gusen II and Gusen III, many years led many study circles and accompanied in addition to his lectures until today researchers, students and relatives of victims of concentration camps from all over the world.

In 1995 he organized with Pierre Serge Choumoff ( Amicale de Mauthausen, Paris) and another in the context of several political communities spanning platform, the first locally - international commemoration in Gusen concentration camp created in 1997 as a relevant, international exchange forum for Mauthausen - Gusen Info - Pages on the Internet. In 1996 and 1997 he was the initiator of two twinning and had 2000 at the invitation of the Austrian Federal Minister of the Interior in the reform initiative Mauthausen, which led to the opening of a new visitor center at the Gusen Memorial 2004. 2005 to 2007 he was involved in the realization of the art project Audioweg Gusen, for which he has among others also taken over the patronage. Haunschmied is also co-founder of the platform Johann Gruber, who works at the Gusen since 2011 to implement a Denk.Statt for the Upper Austrian priest and educator Dr. Johann Gruber in the parish of St. Georgen.

As an author, he worked for decades and over again in numerous publications and documentation of other authors, partly also for radio and television, with and has for many years for an adequate conservation of the architectural remains of the concentration camp at Gusen and making available a portion of the former underground aircraft factory B8 rock crystal one of the former KZ Gusen II. Haunschmied in this regard, since 2009, participant in the Round Table of the Austrian Federal Monument Office.
