Rudolf Haym

Rudolf Haym ( born October 5, 1821 in Green Mountain, † August 27 1901 in St. Anton am Arlberg) was a philosopher and writer.

Life and work

From 1839 to 1843 studied Haym Protestant theology, philosophy and classical philology at Halle and Berlin. In Halle he became in 1839 a member of the Old Hall 's fraternity. In 1843 he became the Dr. phil. doctorate, the habilitation was denied by the Prussian government in 1845.

Rudolf Haym was a member of Eisleben in the Frankfurt National Assembly, participants of the Gotha Nachparlament and since 1866 member of the Prussian House of Representatives. He was one of the supporters of Bismarck.

As from 1868, Haym was a full professor of German literature at the University of Halle. 1873/74 he became rector of Halle's alma mater.

Haym was one of the most important literary critics of his time. Hotly debated was his biography of Schopenhauer (1864 ). The main works are Hegel and his time ( 1857), The Romantic School (1870 ) and an extensive biography Herder ( Herder. shown by his life and his works, 2 volumes, 1880/1885 - by Hans Georg Gadamer " a masterpiece of biographical research "). They all have appeared in reprints and are still considered standard works.
