Rudolf of Żagań

Rudolf von Sagan ( 1411-1418 *, † September 18, 1454 in Konitz ) was Duke of Sagan and mercenary leader of the Teutonic Order, for he fell at the Battle of Konitz. He came from a branch of the Silesian Piast Glogau.

Life

Rudolf was the second son of Duke John I of Sagan and Scholastica of Saxony -Wittenberg (1391-1463), a daughter of the Elector Rudolf III.

Rudolf was, like his father and his brothers Balthasar and John II, commander of the German Knights. After his father's death in 1439, he took over with the oldest brother Balthasar, the same time the guardianship of the younger brothers Wenzel and Johann was incumbent upon the regency over the Duchy of Sagan. After the 1449/50 division made ​​Rudolf received the Saganer share with his brother Balthasar. In addition, they had to undertake to provide for the funding of their widowed mother and her sisters. In contrast, the youngest brother of John II received the Priebuser land belonging to the Duchy of Sagan only since 1413. 1454 Rudolf fought in the then incipient Thirteen Years' War for the Teutonic Order and fell on 18 September at the Battle of Konitz. He was not married and had no children. It is not known where his body was buried. His Saganer share fell to his elder brother Balthasar.
