Rudolf von Gneist

Rudolf von Gneist (* August 13, 1816 in Berlin, † July 22, 1895 ibid; Complete name Heinrich Rudolf Hermann Friedrich von Gneist ) was a Prussian lawyer and politician.

Life

Rudolf von Gneist attended high school in Eisleben and studied from 1833 in Berlin law. There he became in 1833 a member of the Old Berlin fraternity. After graduation (1838 ) and Habilitation ( 1839), he was a lecturer at the Law Faculty of the University of Berlin and taught since 1844 as Professor of Public Law. In 1845 he was appointed extraordinary, and in 1858 full professor at the University of Berlin. Gneist belonged to the Prussian Chamber of Deputies and the Reichstag. He was a member of the City Council (1845-1849 and 1858-1875 ). Gneist was from 1867 a member of the leadership of the National Liberal Party. He advocated the expansion of Prussia to the constitutional state and an independent judiciary. He is known today primarily as a leading advocate of an independent and autonomous administrative jurisdiction. Gneist was co-founder and first president of the Association for Social Policy ( " socialists "). 1888 Gneist was raised to the peerage. He was president of the 7th (1868 in Hamburg), 9 (1871 in Stuttgart), 10 ( 1872 in Frankfurt am Main ), 11 (1873 in Hanover), 12 (1875 in Nuremberg), 13 (1876 in Salzburg), 14 ( 1878 in Jena), 16 ( 1882 in Kassel), 17 ( 1884 in Würzburg), 18 ( 1886 in Wiesbaden), 20 ( 1889 in Strasbourg) and 22 (1893 in Augsburg ) German Jurists. No other lawyer stood before this event so often.

It was in 1888 because of its socio-political merits for the working classes honorary member of the Society for the promotion of community service in Lübeck. In the old St. Matthew's Cemetery in Berlin -Schöneberg he has a grave of honor.
