Ruggiero Giovannelli

Ruggiero Giovannelli (c. 1565 in Velletri, † January 7, 1625 in Rome ) was an Italian singer, conductor and composer.

He is said to have been a pupil of Palestrina, evidence is not available, however. After he had previously been involved as Kapellmeister already at various churches, he was given in 1594 as the successor of Palestrina, the Kapellmeister of the Cappella Giulia at San Pietro, from 1599 he worked as a singer and conductor at the Capella Sistina. He lived and worked in Rome until his death in 1625.

In addition to numerous sacred works more conservative blank, he created a series of motets, madrigals, villanelles and canzonettas, although they reveal the influence of Palestrina, but still show the attempt to go their own musical paths over whose style addition. It is therefore not permissible to describe him only as an imitator of his teacher possible.
