Snow sorrel ( Rumex nivalis)

The snow - dock or snow - sorrel ( Rumex nivalis) is a species of the genus sorrel ( Rumex ) within the family of the buckwheat family ( Polygonaceae ).

Description

The snow - sorrel grows as overwintering green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height 10-25 inches. It formed several unbranched stems that are naked axes or carry one to two stem leaves. The basal leaves are up to 3 cm long, oval -shaped and plump pike.

The flowering period extends from July to August. The inflorescence is unbranched. The Valven are entire, and have at least a small callus at the base. The outer bracts are repulsed.

Ecology

The snow - dock is a Chamaephyt.

Occurrence

In the Eastern Alps the snow sorrel occurs rarely, but mostly in smaller, individual- rich stocks; in the German Alps it is found only in the Allgäu Alps; in Austria, east in the Northern Limestone Alps and the Dachstein in the Austrian Central Alps it occurs very rarely, indeed by the Silvretta eastward, in the Western Alps to the Bernese Oberland and the Upper Valais.

The snow - dock populated Schneetälchen and moraines, especially at altitudes between about 1500 to 2500 meters in the Alps. He needs lime and rich, moist and long snow-covered soils in alpine climate.
