Rumold Mercator

Rumold Mercator (* 1541, † 1599) was, like his famous father Gerhard Mercator professional cartographer.

In his father's slipstream the son drew attention to himself when he in 1587 published a revised in its overall design graphic copy of the Ptolemaic world map of his father in 1569.

1595, a year after the death of his father, Rumold Mercator published a supplement to the book of maps Tabulae Geographicae his father with another 34 cards. Herein are 29 of Gerhard Mercator engraved maps of the missing parts of Europe ( Iceland, the British Isles and the Northern and Eastern European countries).

To complete the card collection fast, Rumold added his own world map of 1587 and had four maps of the continents of the large world map of his father in 1569 by his nephew Gerhard Mercator Junior and Michael Mercator ( sons of Arnold Mercator) to copy. Even the cover is a temporary solution: It is the title of Ptolemy edition of 1578, on which the new title is stuck in book printing.

Furthermore Rumold Mercator published a complete edition with all 107 cards. In fact, this issue is only one bound in a single volume edition of the four series Tabulae Geographicae with its own complement.
