Runyang Bridge

The Runyang Bridge (abbreviation :润 扬 长江 大桥, traditional characters :润 扬 长江 大桥; Pinyin: Runyang Chángjiāng Daqiao ) is a large bridge complex that crosses the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, China.

The complex consists of two major bridges that link Zhenjiang on the south bank of Yangzhou on the north bank of the Yangtze River. The bridge is part of the expressway from Beijing to Shanghai. It is expected that the new compound promotes economic growth in the hitherto agricultural region.

Construction

South Bridge

The south bridge is a suspension bridge erdverankerte with a span of 1,490 m. With the completion in 2005 it was the third longest suspension bridge in the world and the longest in China. Longer only the Akashi - Kaikyo Bridge in Japan with 1,991 m and the Great Belt Bridge over the Great Belt in Denmark with 1,624 m. The height of the towers is 215 m above the river level. They were founded in 57 m depth on the rock. The wire ropes to which the deck of the bridge is suspended, each consisting of 164 strands of each 127 single wires each of diameter 5.3 mm. Each wire rope weighs about 21,000 tons. The main beam of the bridge consists of a box girder construction height of 3 m. The top width of the bridge is 39.2 m and carries six lanes and a narrow walkway on each side for maintenance purposes. The height clearance below the bridge is about 50 m. This allows future also large ships to reach the planned deep port in Shanghai.

North Bridge

The north bridge is a cable-stayed bridge. This design was chosen for reasons of cost for the shorter span of the main part of only 406 m. Together with the two 176 m long side parts results in a total length of the north bridge of 758 m. In contrast to the southern bridge, the height is below the bridge only 18 meters. The pylons of the north bridge 150 m above the river level high.

Overall complex

Between the two bridges, the island is Siyezhou. The total length of the bridge complex is about 35.66 km.

Architectural History

Construction of the bridge began in October 2000 and was completed ahead of schedule. The construction costs amounted to 5.8 billion yuan (about U.S. $ 700 million ). The Runyang Bridge was opened on 30 April 2005. Head of the construction project was Wang Jun, chief engineer of the building contractors authority (Jiangsu Provincial Yangtze River Highway Bridge Construction Commanding Dept).
