Rupprecht Geiger

Rupprecht Geiger ( born January 26, 1908 in Munich, † December 6, 2009 in Munich) was a German abstract painter and sculptor.

Life and work

Rupprecht Geiger, son of the painter Willi Geiger, completed from 1926 to 1929 to study architecture at the School of Applied Arts in Munich, then from 1930 to 1932 as a bricklayer and from 1933 to 1935 studied at the State School Munich. From 1936 to 1940 Geiger worked in various architectural offices in Munich. Geiger worked as an architect in total from 1949 to 1962.

1965-1976 Rupprecht Geiger was professor of painting at the Art Academy Dusseldorf.

As a painter, a violinist was self-taught. He was from 1940 on the eastern front in Poland and Russia, where he began his autodidactic study of painting. In 1943 and 1944 he was employed as a war artist in the Ukraine and Greece.

Rupprecht Geiger in 1949 co-founded the artist group ZEN 49 in Munich. Geiger is an outstanding representative of the non-representational painting in Germany. His art was of Hilla Rebay, German painter and founding director of the Museum for Non- Objective Painting (later, New York Guggenheim Foundation ) funded. Geiger created his life's work on the subject of ' color ' in which it consistently decreased by reduction and clarity. He regarded color as autonomous value, released from the mold was placed their spiritual strength to bear.

In the 1950s, violinist best known for his work with the color red Geiger: "Red is life, energy, potency, power, love, warmth, strength. With their ability to stimulate it in powerful function. " An example from this period is to be 103 × 98 cm oil painting on canvas 470/57.

Characteristic of his oil paintings, screen prints and watercolors were simple geometric shapes (rectangle, square, circle and oval ), bright colors (also light colors) and intense contrasts.

Rupprecht Geiger lived and worked in Munich. In his former studio in Munich's Solln is now the archive Geiger, that manages its artistic legacy and several times a year offering public tours of the archive rooms.
