Ruricius Pompeianus

Ruricius Pompeianus († 312 in Verona ) was a late ancient Roman officer.

Pompeianus was praetorian prefect of Maxentius, the (formal ) Africa prevailed in 312 over Italy and. Otherwise, very little is known about Pompeianus, but he seems to have been an experienced general.

In the year 312 (probably in the spring) crossed Maxentius ' adversaries Constantine with a battle-hardened army of about 40,000 men, the Alps into Italy. Maxentius was apparently surprised by the advance. In a battle of Turin and a little later at Brescia, the troops of Maxentius subject, but was located in the northeast of another army under the command of Pompeianus.

Pompeianus had stayed in Verona, which was expanded into a strong fortress, when Constantine ended his ring around the city. Pompeianus but managed to escape and returned with other troops. This was Constantine the way open to the south, where he smote Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge on 28 October 312 and became the sole ruler of the West.
