Ruschia

Ruschia crassa

Ruschia is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ). The botanical name of the genus honors the farmer Ernst Julius Rusch (1867-1957) from Namibia. Ruschia is one of the most species-rich genera of the family.

Description

The species of the genus Ruschia grow as erect, sometimes prostrate or creeping up forming clumps shrubs. Their leaves are longer than usually wide and rarely re-formed. They are triangular serrated or three -edged and often. Your epidermis is flat to papillose.

The small flowers appear singly or in more or less rich cymes. The petals are purple to white. The filamentous staminodes surround the stamens in a central cone. The nectary forms a lophomorphen ring.

The fünffächrigen, rarely sechsfächrigen capsule fruits are the " Ruschia type ": There are widely divergent source strips, strong, dimensionally stable ceiling fan with upright rim and locking plugs available. Damper blades are missing or they are narrow. The closure body are formed as a hook, hood or chopsticks. The fruits contain brown seeds, which are smooth to papillose. The seeds are 0.6 to 1.6 mm long and 0.4 to 1.2 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Ruschia is with the exception of the eastern and northeastern areas, distributed in South Africa in the south of Namibia, Lesotho and Botswana to the southwest. The species grow under very different environmental conditions.
