The Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (Russian: Российская академия театрального искусства ) is one of the oldest and most traditional drama schools in Russia. It was founded on 22 October 1878. Until 1991 it was known as State Institute of Theatre Arts (Russian Государственный институт театрального искусства ) in Cyrillic letters short ГИТИС (ie Gitis ) known. This abbreviation is commonly used even today. From 1934 to 1991, the additional имени А.В.Луначарского was named in honor of the 1933 deceased Anatoly Lunacharsky used.

The Gitis has an outstanding reputation both in Russia and internationally. It has set itself the goal of teaching students how their classic, traditional drama. Among the creative principles of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts is one of the harmonious combination of pedagogical traditions and innovations in all fields. The entrance exams and the training of the actors and actresses are tough and demanding. Each year around 1,500 students studying at the academy.

In Aarhus, Denmark, the Academy maintains a Scandinavian branch, the Gitis Scandinavia Theatre Academy.
