Rut (roads)

Ruts ( known colloquially as ruts ) are among the road damage and are running in the longitudinal direction road street depressions which are primarily caused by Pressurization and densification of the asphalt due to the effect of high wheel loads from heavy traffic. Especially in the field of speed restrictions, Buswarteflächen, pitch routes or nodes often occur over time to rutting. For concrete roads rutting contrast plays a minor role due to the high strength of the concrete.

Ruts change the cross slope of the roadway and prevent the surface water is drained quickly. The collected in the wells surface water affects the road safety because of aquaplaning ( hydroplaning ) can occur.

Causes

Unlike asphalt concrete is due to its binding agent Bitumen is a thermoplastic road construction material, which makes it especially at high temperatures and heavy loads susceptible to movement. Then step even add other factors, it may lead to rutting.

The following factors can cause rutting:

  • Weak Rated ( thickness) of the asphalt superstructure
  • Incorrect Mischgutsorte (s)
  • Faulty mix
  • Failed to asphalt paving (especially temperature and compaction )
  • Deficient layers bond between the asphalt layers

Rehabilitation

As part of the road maintenance sections or road areas must be rehabilitated with pronounced wheel ruts. In the case of less severe rutting repair measures are used. This includes the milling (fine milling) of the arches and other kinds of deformation in order to restore a flat surface. This method represents a relatively inexpensive and simple restoration method, however, brings a reduction in thickness of the asphalt superstructure with it. There is also the possibility to apply a compensating thin-film coating ( DSK or GSH). Can not be used in the above method, only the complete removal and replacement of the asphalt deck and possibly asphalt binder can be considered.

In order to prevent the formation of ruts in advance, it is important that both the right mix is used and that the installation of the mixture is carried out correctly. With the help of lightening aggregates in the top layer and the installation of a deformation- resistant asphalt binder rutting can be avoided. Statements on the deformation resistance of the asphalt binder can be made by the rutting test.

Explore is currently the cooling of asphalt pavements. In the context of an open space heating, the road so kept snow and ice in the winter and cooled in summer ( use of asphalt pavement as a solar collector ). By lowering the temperature in the asphalt rutting can be reduced.
