Ryūteki

The Ryūteki (Japanese龙 笛, "dragon flute " literally, with the kanji '龙' also refers to the Japanese Emperor ) is a Japanese flute made of bamboo. It is used in courtly gagaku music. The Ryūteki is held horizontally, has holes 7, a length of 40 cm and an inner diameter of 1.3 cm.

The sound of the flute is to embody dragons, between the sky lights ( in gagaku embodied by the Shō ) and humans ( represented by the Hichiriki ) descend from heaven. The Ryūteki is one of three flutes used in gagaku, especially in pieces in the Chinese style. Their mood is lower than that of Komabue and higher than that of Kagurabue.
