Sabriye Tenberken

Sabriye Tenberken ( born September 19, 1970 in Cologne ) is a German tibetologist and founder of the organization Braille Without Borders.

Life

Sabriye Tenberken grew up in Bonn. Due to a retinal disease Tenberken began to go blind as early as the age of nine. Since the age of twelve she is totally blind. She went up to her blindness a Waldorf school, the German Institute for the Blind in Marburg. She then studied Tibetology, sociology and philosophy at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.

Tenberken developed a special Braille for the Tibetan written language. This has become the official Braille for Tibetan.

In 1997, she traveled alone to Tibet, where she met the Dutchman Paul Kronenberg. Together they founded in 1998 the "Blind Centre Tibet " " Braille Without Borders ", which began work in Lhasa by teaching of five blind Tibetan children to read and write the Tibetan Braille.

In 2000 they created a documentary about her life and work, with different eyes. On the basis of this film, she received the Charity Bambi.

2004 Climbing Blind Project took place: Sabriye Tenberken took along with Paul Kronenberg and teenagers at school for the blind in Lhasa as well as an American film crew on one of Erik Weihenmayer ( the first blind Mt Everest climbers ) led mountaineer expedition in Tibet part. The expedition, however, had to be canceled due to bad weather before reaching the summit. The film Blindsight has been awarded with various audience awards: Berlinale, Palm Springs, AFI Los Angeles and in October 2007 in Ghent. The film was seen in January 2008 in the German cinemas.

2005 Tenberken was nominated as one of 1000 women in the Project 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
