Saddell Castle

Saddell Castle is a castle on the east coast of Scotland's Kintyre peninsula. It is located on the bay Saddell Bay, a side bay of the Kilbrannan - Sund, apart from today's B842, which runs along the coast to Campbeltown. 1971 Saddell Castle was inducted into the Scottish monument lists in category A.

History

Builder of Saddell Castle was David Hamilton, the then Bishop of Argyll. It was built on the lands of the then already discontinued Cistercian monastery Saddell Abbey after their seizure by the bishop. The construction was begun in 1508 and completed the castle in 1512. 1558 destroyed troops of the Earl of Sussex Saddell Castle and the castle was abandoned. The building fell to the Clan Campbell, who ruled over large parts of Kintyre. Archibald Campbell, Marquess of Argyll, the first, on the ruins suitable to William Ralston of did Ilk, who renovated 1650-1652. In 1800, various outbuildings were added, while also stones of the monastery Saddell were used. Saddell Castle was abandoned for a second time in the course of the century. 1890 there was a second restoration.
