SafeDisc

SafeDisc is a CD / DVD copy Macrovision. The term copy is misleading, as the SafeDisc does not prevent copying of protected media but only the execution of protected programs in derogation of copied media. A distinction between original and copy medium is possible only if there are differences that can be read by the CD drive. Modern internal software can generate in connection with certain burners 1:1 copies, making it impossible SafeDisc a distinction between original and copy. The same basic vulnerability can be exploited by drive emulation. Newer versions of SafeDisc cause why a blacklist with burning software and software for drive emulation. From SafeDisc, there has been four major versions with numerous sub- versions (as of May 2007). The current version is sold under the name SafeDisc Advanced. All versions of SafeDisc encrypt the protected program and decrypt it only when an original medium is identified and authenticated. Since the key required is also stored on the medium, the copy can be permanently disabled by the decryption of the protected program.

Technology & versions

SafeDisc ( 1)

In the first 5 % of the data structure of the medium are about 10,000 unreadable (defective ) sectors: They should bring the read- burning programs to abort or at least greatly delay. Programs which do not have the so-called functional "intelligent detecting and skipping unreadable sectors ", need for importing a CD several hours.

Evident are SafeDisc protected CDs to be found through the table of contents (TOC ) Files:

  • 00000001.TMP
  • CLCD16.DLL
  • CLCD32.DLL
  • CLOKSPL.EXE
  • DPLAYERX.DLL
  • *. ICD ( the original program file in encrypted form )
  • *. EXE ( has the same file prefix as *. ICD and includes the program loader and parts of the copy )

SafeDisc 2

SafeDisc 2 is also based on specially modified sectors and can work around not always. Can be recognized by SafeDisc 2 protected CDs to be found through the table of contents (TOC ) Files:

  • 00000001.TMP
  • 00000002.TMP ( not always available)

These sectors are readable but not writable: The data on a CD are the EFM coded. Although any user data bytes can be translated into valid EFM words, the other way around but it is so that it, to put it simply, only 256 valid are of 16384 theoretical EFM words ( of which, however most likely not be pressed on a CD). Awareness built invalid EFM words of the original can not be copied, because the writer can only write the valid EFM words.

In addition, SafeDisc 2 checks pregap in which some burners left their signature. Is the CD -ROM drive capable of reading this, so the copy can be easily recognized.

SafeDisc Advanced / SafeDisc 4

SafeDisc Advanced will also prevent the creation of virtual drives. To protect programs, Macrovision provides specialized software that can integrate the manufacturers in their programs and call at any points. From this version starts the protected game, similar to StarForce and SecuROM 7.x, not from a SCSI drive (also SATA drives in AHCI mode are recognized by Windows as SCSI disks). This is to prevent the use of ROMs that were previously only able to emulate the SCSI disk drives. Since SafeDisc but no driver as StarForce, the drives can be hidden from the software side copy protection. This capability has, for example, the program "Daemon Tools".

SafeDisc 4 Advanced

SafeDisc 4 Advanced analyzed the ATIP a CD / DVD. In the ATIP information about the type of CD are stored. Logically, a blank containing the specification CD -R, but can only read the ATIP burner. Nevertheless SafeDisc contains 4 Advanced for CD / DVD -ROM drives as a protection. Where is it in the CD -R ATIP code at a SafeDisc 4 -Advanced - protected CD / DVD is a SafeDisc - code which can be read from CD / DVD -ROM drives by reading short backwards ( on beginning of the CD ). However, not all CD / DVD -ROM drives are able to read backwards.

The crack protection encrypts the. Exe or. Dll files so that the copy can not be removed manually.

SafeDisc 4 Advanced works with blacklisting, ie, it searches the hard drive for file names like " CloneCD "; if they are found, not even the original works. To emulate this version of DVD, is only possible since in Alcohol 120 % version 1.9.6.46xx the " RMPS V2" ( Recordable Media Physical Signature ) is integrated. With this it is possible to store the relevant information in the MDS file and burn with Alcohol 120 % or Daemon Tools Pro Advanced. Burned with RMPS backups only run on systems on which one of the two emulators installed.
