Sagarika (missile)

The Sagarika is a submarine -based medium-range missile developed by India since 1991 for second-strike capability.

Overview

The Sagarika K- 15 was in Hyderabad by the DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization ) designed. The development goes back to the year 1991. Was first published, the project seven years later by the then Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes. The first missiles were delivered in 2001 to the Indian naval forces. On 26 February 2008, the missile was first tested in the Gulf of Bengal. It was followed by five more tests, including three with full range, all were successful. On 12 November 2008 a silo -based version was developed and tested, with the name Shaurya. The Sagarika missile to be mounted on India's first nuclear submarine INS Arihant boot the Arihant class, which was launched on 26 July 2009. Each submarine will be able to be able to carry up to 12 of these missiles. By 2015, three submarines of this class of the Indian Navy will be delivered.
