Sail Rock

The Parusfelsen (Russian: Скала Парус, Skala Parus, German Sail Rock ) is a cliff in the Krasnodar region, on the coast of the Black Sea. The beach area and nearby resorts provide opportunities for recreation and leisure activities. The Natural Monument is located 17 km to the southeast of Gelendzhik (Russian: Геленджика ) not far from the village Praskowejewka (Russian: Прасковеевка ) away.

The Parusfelsen is a in all directions perpendicular towering rock wall that consists of sandstone and stands at right angles to the shore. It has been formed from the rock through the action of geological forces. Three quarters of the wall are also present in flood water. Particularly striking are the proportions of the natural monument. At a thickness of just over a meter at the foot of the cliff measuring about 25 m in height and 20 m in length. This gives the rock the appearance of a square sail - hence the name.

At a height of approximately 2.5 m of rocks has an opening whose origin is unclear. In many guidebooks is described that the rock served during the Russo- Turkish war as a defense against artillery fire from the mountains. This version of the origin of the hole, however, doubted. 1903 S. wrote Wasjukow who explored the coast of the Black Sea, after the examination of the rock, that the cliff " was shot by a ship of the line. Four shot yet, but the wall held firm and even though the tracks are visible, it was not punctured. "

The formation of the unique formation is explained by the erosion of the rock by the sea water, as well as different strengths of the rock. The Parusfelsen was declared on November 24, 1971 by the authorities of Gelendzhik a natural monument. For the protection of the rock of the landscape advice of Diwnomorskoe is (Russian: Дивноморский сельский совет ) responsible.
