Saint-Alban-Leysse

Saint -Alban- Leysse is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes. It is the capital of the canton of Saint -Alban- Leysse in the arrondissement of Chambery.

Geography

Saint -Alban- Leysse is located at 310 m above sea level. M., 4 km east-northeast of the city of Chambéry (air line). The village is located in the west of the department of Savoie, on the southern edge of the massif of the Wallows and at the foot of Nivolet, at the entrance of the river Leysse in the Talfurche of Chambery.

The area of ​​8.40 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the massif of the Wallows. The southern boundary runs mostly along the Leysse who steps out here, a deep V-shaped valley in the valley of Chambery and drains the area west of the Lac du Bourget. The eastern boundary is marked by the gully of Lovettaz. From the course of the river Leysse, the municipality's area extends north across the valley to Mont (520 m above sea level. History

The municipality of Saint -Alban- Leysse was inhabited very early. In Saint- Saturnin traces of human presence were found during the Neolithic; more remains date from the Roman period. In the Middle Ages Saint -Alban formed its own rule, which belonged in the 14th century, the La Ravoire family and then the Lambert family. In 1803 the hamlet Leysse was separated from Saint -Jean- d'Arvey and combined with the municipality of Saint -Alban. To avoid confusion with other municipalities of the same name, in 1946 the official name of Saint -Alban- Leysse was introduced.

Population

With 5689 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint -Alban- Leysse one of the larger towns in the Savoie département. Since the early 1980s, a striking increase in population was recorded. Since then, the population has doubled. Saint -Alban- Leysse is part of the agglomeration of Chambery. The settlement area has grown together seamlessly with that of the neighboring communities Bassens, La Ravoire and Barby.
