Saint Birgitta's chapel

The St. Bridget 's Chapel was a Christian chapel in the village Sikavarp on the Swedish Baltic Sea island of Öland belonging headland Kapelludden. From the chapel only a ruin remains.

History

The chapel was built in the 13th century and was the largest chapel of Öland. It was dedicated to St. Bridget, after the corpse in 1374, had been brought ashore in Sikavarp during the transfer of the mortal remains of the saint from Rome to Vadstena. Previously, the church probably of Celtic saints Brigida of Kildare was consecrated.

The chapel had a length of 27 meters and a width of 12 meters. The motivation for the construction is likely to be incurred, as the trading center Sikavarp flourished and more and more people attracted. The chapel should also allow greater religious services in trading hours.

With the end Sikavarps as a trading center declined the chapel. During a winter storm in 1914 the then still existing south wall collapsed. Today, especially the northern wall is still preserved.
