The Monastery of St. Georgen is a pen complex in the town of St. Georgen aL in Austria. It celebrated its 1,000 th anniversary in 2003.

History

The monastery was founded in 1002-1008 by the Countess weighting castle, the wife of Count Ottwin von Sonnenburg ( Pusteria ). The monastery was first mentioned in a now exhibited in the Carinthian Provincial Museum founder certificate.

In the years 1654 to 1658 the monastery was remodeled by the architect Pietro Francesco Carlone in the Baroque style. Parts of the original buildings and the Renaissance arcades in the northern courtyard are taken to preserve.

In 1783 the monastery was abolished by Emperor Joseph II. In the course of 1788 it came up for auction. Maximilian Thaddeus Egger was awarded the contract for a sale of 163 100 guilders Schilling and established the pen complex to the new seat of the Counts of Egger. Today the former Benedictine convent is a formation house and seminar hotel.
