Saint-Nectaire, Puy-de-Dôme

Saint- Nectaire is a French municipality with 724 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. Nationally known, it is mainly by two things:

  • The Romanesque former priory church Notre- Dame-du -Mont- Cornadore de Saint- Nectaire
  • Named after the city of Saint- Nectaire cheese, which is produced here and in the surrounding area.

Furthermore, the city has thermal waters.

Geography

Saint- Nectaire is located in the eastern part of the massif Monts Dore, which in turn is part of the Massif Central. The city is divided into two parts, Saint- Nectaire -le-Haut with the Romanesque church on the southern slope of the valley and Saint- Nectaire -le- Bas with the thermal springs in the valley below.

History

Dolmens and menhirs

Saint- Nectaire still has many testimonies of the Neolithic era, for example, so there are still five dolmens and menhirs two in the vicinity of the village to see. Immediately on Mont Cornadore, that is not far from the later Christian church, there is a dolmen of major proportions. Antique and Migration Period

The Romanesque former priory of Saint- Nectaire

The former priory church Notre- Dame-du -Mont- Cornadore de Saint- Nectaire is built in the typical of the Auvergne variant of the Romanesque church architecture and traditions. It is one of the five Romanesque main churches in the Puy -de- Dôme, together with the Collegiate Church of Notre -Dame du Port, Clermont- Ferrand, the Notre-Dame Basilica in Orcival, the monastery church Saint- Austremoine in Issoire and the Church of Saint - Saturnin. Particularly striking and unique is the increase of the transept, the barlong as massif or auvergnatischer crossbar is referred to in the Romanesque churches of the Auvergne.
