Saint Petersburg Philharmonia

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic (actually: .. . St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic DD Shostakovich - Russian Санкт - Петербургская академическая филармония им Д Д Шостаковича ) is a public cultural facility in St. Petersburg, the oldest Philharmonic of Russia. It includes two concert halls and offers space for two symphonic orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.

History

1802 was the first Philharmonic Society of Europe in Saint Petersburg. 1824 was carried out in St. Petersburg, the " Missa Solemnis " by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The first building with the large concert hall ( Большой зал ) with over 1500 seats was built in 1839 according the design of architect Paul Jacot; the facades were designed by the architect Carlo Rossi. Originally the building for the Assembly of Nobles ( Дворянское собрание ) was determined. It was located on the Mikhailovskaya street 2

At the end of the forties of the 19th century, the concert hall has become the center of the musical culture of Saint Petersburg. There were many famous musicians of the time, such as Ferenc Liszt, Anton Rubinstein, Clara Schumann, Richard Wagner, Pauline Viardot -Garcia, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky -Korsakov, among others

After the October Revolution of room 1921 on " Petrograd Philharmonic " was, and renamed in 1924 " Leningrad Philharmonic ". In 1975, the name of Dmitri Shostakovich was attached. In 1991 the building was renamed to " St. Petersburg Philharmonic ".

During the Siege of Leningrad, on August 9, 1942 the Seventh " Leningrad " Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich was performed in the concert hall.

On 15 May 1949, the small chamber music hall ( Малый зал ) was opened with the name of Mikhail Glinka on Nevsky Prospekt 30. The hall is located in the so-called " Engelhardt House", built in 1761 to plans by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and rebuilt in the 19th century by Paul Jacot.

In the halls of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic occur two almost same orchestra:

  • Deserved collective of the Russian Federation - Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra ( chief conductor Yuri Temirkanov, 2 Conductor: Nikolai Aleksjejew )
  • Academic Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra ( chief conductor Alexandr Dmitrjew, 2 Conductor: Vladimir Altschuler )
