Saint-Sandoux

Saint- Sandoux is a commune in the Puy -de- Dôme in the Auvergne region. It is located about 25 kilometers south of Clermont -Ferrand.

Population

The rustic -looking place is situated near the city of Clermont- Ferrand. In recent years, increased construction activity and a large increase in population has been made, to date there are 906 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

The medieval town center is highly visible on a small plateau. To the east of the village lies a small level, to the south the terrain rises up to 848 m high Puy de Saint- Sandoux, in the north to 716 m high Puy de Peyronère.

History

The Gallo-Roman times until the village was traceable to the 11th century Maismac. It received its current name in honor of the Merovingian saints St. Sindulfus, the then patron saint of the village church.

From the 13th century, the village of La Tour d' Auvergne family belonged, in the 16th century Catherine de Médicis, 1607 Finally, the castle is the Lords of Travers, on the northern edge of the village.

Attractions

The medieval village still shows traces of the plant as a defense village. From the village and especially the accessible via hiking trails Puy de Saint- Sandoux to open up views over the beautiful landscape of the area.

At Puy de Saint- Sandoux is a much used launch pad for paragliders.

Economy

In the immediate vicinity of the village lies the foyer Atelier de Ceyran one operated by the Association CAPPA sheltered workshop with training center and dormitory.

For several years companies have different public, agricultural and research institutions a nursery for the maintenance of the region traditional orchards and its historic apple varieties.
