Salatiga

Geographical unit

Salatiga is an Indonesian city on the island of Java, with 176,000 inhabitants ( 2006). It is located in the province of Central Java, not ten miles from the volcanoes Merbabu and Telomoyo.

The climate is slightly cooler throughout the year, as the city is at about 500 meters altitude. The city is divided into four sub-districts Argomulyo, Tingkir, Sidomukti and Sidorejo.

Inscriptions that were found on a stele state that Salatiga exists since 24 July 750.

On July 1, 1917 Salatiga received as part of the colony of the Dutch East Indies the status of a municipality ( staad gemeente ) and then in 1929 the municipal law ( Stadsgemeente Salatiga ).

In Salatiga, the private Christian university Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana ( UKSW ) is with about 14,000 students.
