Salcedo is the capital of the province of Hermanas Mirabal ( Mirabal sisters ) in the Dominican Republic.

History

By 1896, Salcedo was still called Juana Núñez. The name was changed in honor of the independence fighter Francisco Antonio Salcedo in today. In the early 1900's the city was still part of the district Moca in the province of La Vega.

Salcedo is the birthplace of the three Mirabal sisters who were planning the overthrow of the dictator Rafael Trujillo and on 25 November 1960 on the return trip from Puerto Plata, where they had visited their imprisoned men, were murdered with her ​​driver from Trujillo's henchmen. In conuco, five kilometers east of the city, there is a museum called Ojo de Agua ( water eye dt ) in honor of the three sisters, which was established by the fourth sister Bélgica Adela Mirabal.

Economy

Since the ground around Salcedo is very fertile, agriculture plays an important role economically. Agricultural products are primarily bananas, coffee, yucca and sweet potatoes. But there are also cultivated other foods such as citrus fruits, cocoa and other vegetables such as corn and coconuts.
